General Questions

  • What is the life expectancy of my HVAC system?

    The average life expectancy of a furnace or air conditioner is approximately 10 years. However, system failures can occur if:

    • The system is overrun or filthy
    • The systems is older  — sometimes it's the year, make, and model of the system
    • The system is not serviced regularly

    Over the course of time, these things can significantly reduce the life expectancy of the system.

  • Do you provide a free estimate for replacing an HVAC system?

    Yes. We provide a free estimate for replacing HVAC systems, water heaters, duct cleaning services, duct sealing services, and heating services.

  • How much is your diagnostic fee, and what does it cover?

    The diagnostic fee is $120, you will receive a full diagnostic report of your HVAC system that will include any failures and recommendation.

  • Can my diagnostic fee be applied toward the cost of my repair?

    Yes. The type of repair will determine the amount that can be applyed to the invoice.

  • How long are your time frames? Why are they so long, and can you provide a more accurate time?

    Your time is very important to Sledge Total Protection. We give a 2-hour window, allowing for time in the facility/home to asses and provide a full diagnostic. We create a plan to repair the system, discuss payment/financing, and repair the system.

  • What services do you provide?

    We are a full-service HVAC company. We provide all your heating and air conditioning maintenance, installation, and repairs.

  • What is included in your maintenance package?

    We have a few maintenance plan to choose from. Please see our service plan page. They all include prevent checkups and discounts for members only.

  • What areas do you service?

    We service the Washington Metropolitan (DMV) area which includes: Anne Arundel County, Prince George's County, Montgomery County, Washington D.C., and Charles County.

Mechanical Questions

  • When should I change my filter?

    Every house is different, and there are many types of filters on the market, but we recommend checking your filter every 30 days. If you have an even layer of dust and debris on it, you should replace it.

  • What is a flame sensor?

    A flame sensor is a safety device that's on a furnace. What it does is detect the flame on a furnace. If it doesn't detect a flame, it will tell the furnace to turn the gas off, as it may be leaking gas into the home.

  • How often should I clean my evaporator coil?

    You should have your evaporator coils checked every year and clean as needed.

  • How often do I need to replace my capacitor?

    There are capacitors on the outside and the inside. They should be checked during your preventive maintenance checkup twice a year.

  • Why is my thermostat blank?

    You first should check your batteries. If that doesn't solve your problem, call Sledge Total Protection. We will perform a diagnostic checkup to find the problem.

  • Why is there water coming from my AC when it is on?

    Your drain line may be blocked or you have a cracked drain pan.

  • Why do I see ice on my line set?

    There are a few issues that can cause this. One issue could be a dirty filter. Call for complete diagnostics.

  • Why can't I keep my R-22 refrigerant system?

    The EPA has placed a restriction on the use of R-22 refrigerant. It will be phased out completely soon.
